Epoxy Floor Coatings in Canton and Stark County
Commercial kitchens across Stark County, from a quick-service line to a full-service restaurant kitchen, are one of the harder environments an epoxy system faces, and not because of chemical exposure alone. A dish pit runs hot water and steam against an otherwise room-temperature slab, and that repeated temperature swing, thermal shock, is what an epoxy system built for a warehouse was never asked to survive. A kitchen floor needs a system, often a mortar or urethane-mortar base, specified for that cycling and standing water, not the same build used two doors down in dry storage.
Automotive bays and manufacturing floors along the I-77 and US-30 corridors carry a different exposure: oil, coolant, brake fluid, and in some plants a specific process chemical the resin has to be matched against by name, not category. A shop floor that stands in fluids for years needs the chemical resistance data sheet checked against what actually crosses it, and a warehouse-grade epoxy chosen for cost alone is a common reason a bay floor fails early while the office floor next to it holds up fine.
Washdown areas, a kitchen, a food-processing line, or a wet-process plant step, need cove base carried up the wall at every floor-to-wall junction. A square corner is exactly where standing water and cleaning chemicals work into a seam over time, and integral cove closes it into one continuous surface instead of a joint for a health inspector to flag.
What "Epoxy" Actually Means
Epoxy is a two-part resin, a base and a hardener mixed on site, that cures through a chemical reaction rather than by drying the way ordinary paint does. That reaction is what gives a properly installed epoxy floor its chemical and impact resistance, and why mix ratio and working time matter more on an epoxy job than most others we run.
Not every epoxy is built the same way. 100% solids epoxy has essentially no solvent to evaporate off, so it builds thickness fast and carries the strongest chemical and abrasion resistance, the standard choice for a kitchen, automotive bay, or plant floor. Water-based epoxy is thinner, easier to apply, and lower odor, suited to an occupied office or a lighter-duty floor. Solvent-based epoxy sits between the two on build and cost but carries the strongest odor and VOC profile, a poor fit for an occupied building and rarely our first recommendation on a Stark County job.
Build Systems: Self-Leveling, Mortar, and Topcoat
A self-leveling epoxy system is poured and worked with a gauge rake and spike roller to a target mil thickness, producing the smooth, seamless finish most people picture when they hear "epoxy floor." It is the right build for a floor that needs a clean, easy-to-clean surface without heavy impact loading, which covers most kitchens and light manufacturing floors. A troweled epoxy mortar system is different: sand or aggregate blended into the resin and trowel-applied at a heavier build, for a floor where impact resistance, not just chemical resistance, is the priority, a shop floor that takes dropped tooling or heavy rolling loads. It costs more and takes longer to install than a self-leveling system, the tradeoff for the extra durability.
A urethane topcoat over either build is where UV stability and long-term abrasion resistance actually live. Epoxy on its own ambers and chalks under UV exposure, a real limitation in a bay with skylights or dock-door light, and can scuff under sustained traffic faster than urethane will. The topcoat is a thinner, harder, UV-stable coat over the epoxy base, and it is the part of the system that carries the wear so the epoxy underneath does not have to.
Broadcast Media for Slip Resistance and Finish
Broadcast quartz or vinyl flake is worked into the wet coating before it cures, giving the floor mechanical slip resistance underfoot and hiding the scuffing that shows up fast on a solid-color floor. A kitchen or a walk-in cooler ramp is a straightforward call for a broadcast finish; a showroom where appearance matters more than traction is more often a solid color or decorative flake for looks rather than function. Slip resistance is a floor decision made at the design stage, not added after with a mat.
Epoxy’s Honest Limits
Epoxy is a strong, proven system, and it is also not the right answer everywhere, and we would rather say that plainly than sell a floor into a job it was not built for. Unprotected epoxy ambers and can chalk under sustained sunlight, exactly why a urethane topcoat matters on a bay with real UV exposure rather than being an upsell. It can also be more brittle under impact than a flexible polyaspartic or urethane system, so a floor that takes regular dropped tooling sometimes needs a mortar build or a different resin family, a call made on the walkthrough, not after the floor cracks. A floor that has to reopen on a hard deadline, a distribution center that cannot lose a shift, is often better served by a rapid-cure polyaspartic system, its own product and its own page.

How long before we can drive on it?
It depends on the product and the site conditions, not a fixed number we can quote in general. Foot traffic can usually go back on an epoxy floor well before vehicle or forklift traffic, and full chemical cure, the point where the coating has its complete strength, always comes later than the point it can take light traffic. Temperature and humidity on the day of application change that timeline as much as the product, which is why the manufacturer’s data sheet and your site conditions set the real number, not a general rule.
What is the difference between 100% solids, water-based, and solvent-based epoxy?
100% solids epoxy has almost no solvent to evaporate, so it builds thickness fast and carries the strongest chemical and abrasion resistance, the standard for kitchens, automotive bays, and plant floors. Water-based epoxy is thinner and lower odor, better for a lighter-duty floor in an occupied space. Solvent-based epoxy sits in between on build and cost but carries the strongest odor profile, a poor fit for an occupied building.
Does epoxy hold up in a commercial kitchen with a dish pit?
It can, but the system has to be specified for the exposure, not just chemical resistance. A dish pit puts a slab through repeated thermal shock, hot water and steam against an otherwise room-temperature floor, and a warehouse-grade epoxy that is fine elsewhere in the building can fail near a dish pit for that reason. We spec a mortar or urethane-mortar base for that thermal cycling instead of the build used two doors down.
Do you need a topcoat over epoxy?
Where UV exposure or heavy abrasion is real, yes. Epoxy on its own can amber, chalk, or scuff under sustained sunlight and traffic, and a urethane topcoat is a thinner, harder, UV-stable coat that carries that wear so the epoxy base underneath does not have to. An interior floor away from UV and heavy abrasion often does not need one, and we spec it on the walkthrough rather than by default.
Will epoxy make our floor slip-resistant?
On its own, a smooth epoxy finish is not especially slip-resistant, particularly when wet. Broadcasting quartz or vinyl flake into the coating while it is still wet builds real mechanical slip resistance underfoot, which is why a kitchen floor or a walk-in cooler ramp typically calls for a broadcast finish rather than a solid color coat.
